The concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio Italien, a festive work that blends Italian folk and fanfares into a showcase of rhythm, humour and melody, written after the composer’s visit to Rome in 1880.
Mezzo-soprano Lily Mo Browne, most recent winner of the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Award, joins the Orchestra in Elgar’s Sea Pictures, which capture the ocean’s shifting moods through settings of five poems.
The evening concludes with a display of dazzling orchestral colour in Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite, telling the tale of a magical bird who helps Prince Ivan defeat the evil sorcerer Kashchei.
